마이크 조하니스 미국 농무장관은 일본 정부가 12일 미국과 캐나다산 쇠고기에 대해 지난 2년 간 취했던 수입금지 조처를 해제한 것을 환영했습니다.
조하니스 장관은 미국 정육업계는 열흘 안에 일본에 쇠고기를 수출할 준비가 돼 있다고 밝혔습니다. 일본은 미국산 쇠고기의 최대 수입국이지만 지난 2003년 북미 지역에서 광우병이 발생하자 수입을 전면 금지했습니다.
일본은 새 규정에서 미국산 쇠고기 수입은 생후 20개월 이내의 소로 부터 얻은 것으로 한정했습니다. 한편 일본의 검역관들은 미국을 방문해 육류 취급이 제대로 이뤄지는지를 검증하기로 했습니다.

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns is hailing Japan's decision today (Monday) to end its two-year ban on U.S. and Canadian beef imports. Mr. Johanns says U.S. beef shippers are ready to resume deliveries to Japan within 10 days.
Japan once was the largest importer of U.S. beef, but halted all shipments in 2003, after cases of mad cow disease were discovered in North America. The new regulations require that imported American beef must come from cattle no more than 20 months old.
Japanese inspectors also will come to this country to verify that producers are trimming meat properly ( -- removing all brain and spinal-cord tissue, which could harbor the malformed proteins that cause bovine spongiform encephalopathy). Eating meat from cattle infected with mad-cow disease is believed to be a cause of a similar fatal brain ailment in humans.
