한국서울에서, 약 7백여명의 국제 인권운동가와 여러나라 정부 관리들이 모인가운데 북한의 인권실상을 알리기위한 북한인권 국제대회가 삼일일정으로 개막되었습니다.
이번 대회는 한국의 여러 인권단체와 미국정부의 부분적인 지원을 받고있는 친 민주화 단체, ‘프리덤 하우스’ 주최로 열렸고, 미국의 북한 인권담당 특사인 제이 레프코비츠 씨와 알렉산더 버쉬바우 주한 미국 대사를 포함해, 황장엽 전 북한 노동당 비서 등이 참가하고있습니다 .
한국정부는 북한의 핵 계획을 둘러싼 국제적인 중재노력과 남북한간의 화해노력을 저해하게 되지 않을까 우려해, 이번 인권회의에 관해 별다른 의사표시를 하지않고있습니다. 이같은 한국정부의 태도는 회의 참석자들로부터 비판을 받고있습니다.

About 700 government officials and activists are attending a conference in South Korea on human rights abuses in North Korea.
Attendees include the U.S. special envoy for North Korean human rights, Jay Lefkowitz, U.S. Ambassador to South Korea Alexander Vershbow and Hwang Jang Yop, the highest-ranking North Korean to defect to the South. The conference was organized by South Korean human rights groups and Freedom House, a pro-democracy organization partly funded by the U.S. government.
The South Korean government has been largely silent about the three-day conference, fearing its voice could hurt North-South reconciliation efforts -- and also complicate international efforts to resolve the standoff over the North's nuclear programs. Seoul's stance has drawn criticism at the conference.
