Iran's hard-line president has defiantly brushed off criticism of his nation's controversial nuclear activities, saying no country has the right to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear technology.
President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's remarks were delivered Saturday in a speech to celebrate the volunteer militia known as the Basij. Iranian television reported that millions of Basij members formed human chains along a Tehran highway and in other parts of the country.
The official news agency, IRNA, reports the Islamic militia members shouted anti-American and anti-Israeli slogans, and also protested in front of the United Nations office in the city of Mashhad. On Thursday, the International Atomic Energy Agency put off referring Iran before the U.N. Security Council for possible sanctions over its nuclear activities in order to give diplomacy another chance. The United States says Iran is secretly pursuing nuclear weapons, a charge Tehran denies.
