중국 외교부의 류 지안차오 대변인은 22일, 아시아는 세계에서 인구가 가장 많은 지역이지만, 아시아에서 유엔 사무총장을 배출한지 34년이 지났다고 말했습니다.
아시아 출신의 마지막 사무총장은 10년 임기를 마치고 지난 1971년에 은퇴한 버마의 우 탄트 씨였습니다.
코피 아난 현 사무총장은 내년에 그의 두번째이자 마지막 임기를 마치게 됩니다.
현재 유엔 사무총장 선거에 출마를 선언한 인사로는 태국의 수라키아르트 사티라탈 부총리와 스리랑카의 전 평화협상자인 자얀타 다나팔라 씨등입니다.
중국 정부는 아시아 국가들이 아시아 출신 유엔 사무총장 후보에 관해 의견일치를 보아야 할 것이라고 말했습니다.

China says the next secretary-general of the United Nations should come from Asia.A foreign ministry spokesman (Liu Jianchao) said today (Tuesday) that Asia is the most populous region in the world, yet it has been 34 years since an Asian headed the world body.
The last secretary-general to come from Asia was Burma's U Thant, who retired in 1971 after 10 years in office.
Current Secretary-General Kofi Annan finishes his second and last term next year.
Declared candidates to succeed him include Thai Deputy Prime Minister Surakiart Sathirathai and Sri Lanka's former peace negotiator, Jayantha Dhanapala.
The Chinese government suggests that Asian countries should reach a consensus on a regional candidate for the post.
