The World Health Organization is warning that more people in China are likely to become infected with the bird flu virus.

The warning follows China's confirmation Wednesday of its first two human cases of the potentially lethal H5N1 virus.

The WHO representative in China (Henk Bekedam) said today (Thursday) he is happy with the government's efforts to combat the disease, but he said the country still faces big challenges. He noted that most (70 percent) of China's 14-billion domestic poultry are kept in people's backyards.

Chinese state media reported two more bird flu outbreaks (in Hubei and Xinjiang) today.

Beijing has pledged to vaccinate all of its domestic fowl against bird flu.

Meanwhile, Indonesia's health ministry says two young women died last week from bird flu.

The H5N1 strain has claimed more than 60 lives in East Asia since 2003. Scientists fear the strain could mutate and be passed between humans.
