미국의 조지 부쉬 대통령이 아시아 태평양 경제협력체 에에펙 정상회의 참석을 위해 한국에 도착했습니다. 부쉬 대통령은 18일 부산에서 시작되는 에이펙 연례 정상회의에 앞서 17일 경주에서 노무현 한국 대통령을 만날 예정입니다.
두 지도자는 공동 기자 회견을 가진 후, 부인들도 함께 하는 오찬을 한 후, 불국사를 둘러볼 예정입니다. 에이펙 정상회의는 세계무역기구 WTO 회원국들에게 농업 보조금을 둘러싼 교착상태를 해소하라고 촉구할 것으로 예상되고 있습니다.
또한 지적 재산권과 조류 독감, 테러리즘 등의 안건들도 논의될 예정입니다. 부쉬 대통령은 일본 교토로부터 부산에 도착했습니다.
부쉬 대통령은 일본에서 행한 연설에서, 타이완을 성공적인 민주 사회의 사례로 들면서, 중국은 국민들에게 더 많은 정치적 자유를 부여해야 한다고 말했습니다. 중국의 리자오싱 외교부장은 부쉬 대통령의 그같은 발언을 일축하면서, 중국과 타이완이 개별 국가로 언급돼서는 안된다고 말했습니다.

President Bush has arrived in South Korea for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit. Mr. Bush is to meet with South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun Thursday in the town of Gyongju before the two leaders head to Busan for Friday's start of the annual APEC summit.
The conference is expected to encourage members of the World Trade Organization to break a deadlock over agricultural subsidies. Topics also will include intellectual property rights, bird flu and terrorism. Mr. Bush arrived in South Korea from Kyoto, Japan.
During a speech there, he said China should grant more political freedom to its citizens, and he held up its rival, Taiwan, as an example of a successful democratic society. China's Foreign Minister, Li Zhaoxing, dismissed Mr. Bush's comments, and said that China and Taiwan should not be talked about as separate entities.
