프랑스 무슬림 빈민가 청년들의 폭동이 거의 2주째 계속되는 가운데 7일 처음으로 폭력으로 인한 사망자가 발생했습니다. 6일 밤에 폭도들이 1,400여대의 차량을 불태우고 10여명의 경찰에 부상을 입히는 가운데 400여명이 체포됐습니다.
자크 시라크 프랑스 대통령의 질서 회복과 범법자들에 대한 단호한 대처 천명에도 불구하고 폭동은 점차 악화되고 있습니다. 분석가들은 주로 아프리카계 흑인 아랍 무슬림 청년들이 인종 차별과 높은 실업률에 대한 분노의 표시로 폭력을 사용하고 있다고 분석했습니다.
그러나 필립 두스트 –블라지 프랑스 외무장관은 프랑스는 위험하지도 않으며, 또 인종차별도 하지 않는다고 말했습니다. 지난 27일 경찰의 검문을 피해 달아나던 10대 소년 2명의 감전사로 촉발된 이번 사태는 지난 3일부터 수도권 이외 지역에서도 방화가 잇따르고 있습니다.

France has been hit by its worst night of rioting since the unrest broke out almost two weeks ago, and a man who died today (Monday) became the first fatality of the violence. Sunday night, 400 people were arrested as rioters burned more than 14-hundred cars and injured dozens of police.
The rioting worsened despite French President Jacques Chirac's vow to restore order and punish those involved. Analysts say the rioters -- mainly young black and Arab Muslims of North African descent -- are using violence to express anger at racism and high unemployment.
But French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy told EU counterparts today (Monday) that his country is not dangerous and is not racist. The violence began outside Paris October 27th, after the accidental deaths of two North African teenagers who were said to be fleeing police.
