The Palestinian Authority says the militant Islamic Jihad group has agreed to stop firing Qassam rockets and mortar from the Gaza Strip into southern Israel.
The announcement today (Sunday) follows a surge of violence, including a suicide bombing by a Jihad militant that killed five Israelis last week. Since then Israel has launched a series of retaliatory strikes in northern Gaza that have killed at least nine Palestinians.
It is not clear what, if any, impact today's Palestinian Authority deal with Jihad militants will have on Israeli military plans. In announcing the ceasefire deal, the Palestinian Authority said Israel was ready to stop its offensive.
