국제 자연보호 연맹은 26일, 지구 온난화가 계속되는 산호초 파괴의 주범이라고 비난하는 내용의 보고서를 발표했습니다. 국제 자연보호 연맹은 바닷물의 온도 상승으로 산호초의 먹이가 되는 조류가 죽어가고 있다고 지적했습니다.
이 기구는 앞으로 50년 동안에도 대규모의 산호 소멸은 정규적인 현상이 될 것이라고 전망했습니다. 이 기구는 지구상의 산호초 약 20%가 이미 파괴됐으며 아무런 조치가 취해지지 않는다면 30%는 앞으로 심각하게 훼손될 것이라고 지적했습니다.

A conservation group is warning that half the world's coral reefs may disappear within 40 years.
The World Conservation Union issued a report today (Wednesday) blaming global warming as a major factor in ongoing destruction of the reefs. The group says rising ocean temperatures are killing the algae on which corals depend for food and color. The process is called coral bleaching.
It says massive coral bleaching will become a regular event over the next 50 years. The group estimates about 20 percent of Earth's coral reefs have already been destroyed and that another 30 percent will become seriously depleted if no action is taken soon.
