월포위츠 총재는 24일자 파이낸셜타임스 신문에 기고한 글에서 미국은 농촌지원을 대폭 삭감하고 유럽연합은 시장을 개방해야하며 개발도상국들은 농업보조정책을 축소해야 한다고 지적했습니다.
세계은행 총재는 12월에 홍콩에서 개최될 세계무역기구 회의가 합의도출에 실패할 경우, 수 백 만 명에 달하는 세계에서 가장 가난한 사람들이 피해를 입을 것이라고 말했습니다.
무역장벽 해소에 관한 세계무역기구 회의는 농업정책에 관한 합의 실패로 지난 2003년부터 대부분 교착상태에 빠져있습니다.

World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz says the upcoming World Trade Organization talks in Hong Kong will fail unless all sides make concessions.
Writing in today's (Monday's) Financial Times newspaper, Mr. Wolfowitz says the United States must substantially cut farm subsidies, the European Union should open its markets, and developing nations must reduce agriculture protectionist policies.
The World Bank chief says failure to reach a deal at the Hong Kong talks in December will harm millions of the world's poorest people. WTO talks on lowering trade barriers have been largely deadlocked since 2003 due to disagreements over agriculture policy.
