수 천명의 필리핀 시위자들이 글로리아 아로요 대통령의 사임을 요구하며 대통령 궁 근처에 집결했습니다.
최소한 4천명의 시위자들이 대통령 궁에 접근하는 것을 막기 위해 21일 시위진압 경찰이 배치됐습니다. 이 와중에 적어도 한 명의 경찰이 부상당한 것으로 전해졌습니다.
지난 9월 초, 필리핀 의회가 아로요 대통령을 탄핵하려는 야당의 시도를 저지한 후 수 많은 시위가 벌어졌습니다.
아로요 대통령은 지난 2004년 5월 대통령 선거 개표 당시 선거관리위원회 관리와 1대화를 나누었음을 시인한 후 퇴진 압력을 받아왔습니다. 아로요 대통령은 개표과정에서 부정이 있었다는 비난을 일축하고 사임요구를 거부하고 있습니다.

Several thousand protesters in the Philippines have gathered near the presidential palace to demand the resignation of President Gloria Arroyo. Anti-riot police were deployed today (Friday) to block at least four thousand protesters from getting too close to the palace.
At least one officer was reported injured. Numerous protests have taken place since early September when lawmakers rejected an attempt by the opposition to impeach Ms. Arroyo. She has been under fire after admitting she called an election official during the vote-counting in the May 2004 presidential election.
Ms. Arroyo has denied trying to rig the outcome of the election, and has resisted calls for her resignation. So far, protests against Ms. Arroyo have failed to gain the numbers or momentum of the public outcry that brought down her predecessor, Joseph Estrada.
