허리케인 윌마가 멕시코의 휴양지인 코주멜 섬을 강타하고 있는 가운데 강한 비바람으로 인해 수많은 관광객들이 긴급 피난시설에 갖혀 있다고 기상당국이 밝혔습니다.
미국 국립기상청은 태풍 윌마는 코주멜 섬에 몇 시간 머문 뒤 멕시코 유카탄 반도쪽으로 서진해 오후 늦게 상륙할 것이라고 말했습니다.
윌마는 현재 최대 속도 230 킬로미터로 극도로 위험한 태풍으로 간주되고 있습니다. 기상관측통들은 윌마가 멕시코 해안에 약 50센티, 그리고 서부 쿠바 고원지대에 1미터에 이르는 비를 뿌릴 것으로 예상되며 더욱 세력이 강화될 수 있다고 말했습니다.
적십자사는 이 지역에 비상 구호품을 갖춘 요원들을 배치했다고 말했습니다.

Weather forecasters say Hurricane Wilma is now pounding the Mexican resort island of Cozumel, as powerful winds and rain trap thousands of tourists inside emergency shelters.
The U.S. National Weather Service says Wilma could linger over Cozumel for hours before moving west to the mainland of Mexico's Yucatan peninsula, where it is expected to make landfall late in the day (Friday).
The slow-moving storm, described as extremely dangerous, is carrying maximum sustained winds of 230 kilometers-an-hour.
The Red Cross says it has relief units with emergency supplies set up across the region.
Forecasters say Wilma could gain strength today (Friday) as it dumps some 50 centimeters of rain on the Mexican coast and up to one meter of rain on the higher elevations of western Cuba. More than 200-thousand Cubans have been evacuated.
After leaving the Yucatan peninsula, Wilma is expected to swing eastward toward Cuba, striking (the southeastern U.S. state of) Florida by late Monday or early Tuesday.
