올해 1월부터 현재까지 6백만 명이 넘는 사람들이 굶주림과 그에 따른 질병으로 사망했습니다. 전 세계 8억 5천만 명 이상의 사람들이 필요한 식량을 제대로 확보하지 못하고 있습니다.
유엔 세계 식량 농업 기구 FAO는 2015년까지 전 세계에서 굶주리는 사람들의 수를 절반으로 줄인다는 목표를 달성하기 위해 열심히 노력하고 있습니다.
세계 식량 농업 기구의 자크 디우 사무총장은 16일 로마에 있는 FAO본부에서 열린 특별 기념식에서, 25주년을 맞는 올해 세계 식량의 날 주제는 [농업과 문화간 대화: 우리의 공동된 유산]이라고 밝혔습니다.
디우 사무총장은 문화를 넘나드는 대화를 통해 새로운 지식을 받아 들이는 것이 가능하게 된다고 지적했습니다.
디우 총장은 오늘날 세계는 수요 증가에 부응하고 또한 가난한 사람들의 굶주림을 해소할 수 있을 만큼 충분한 식량을 생산할 수 있는 자원과 기술을 갖고 있다고 덧붙였습니다.
디우 총장은 파라과이 대통령의 부인인 마리아 글로리아 페나요 드 두아르테 여사와 세계 육상 선수권 대회 우승자인 뉴질랜드의 비트리스 포무이나 씨, 그리고 아일랜드의 가수 로난 키팅 씨 등 3명을 세계 식량 농업 기구의 새로운 친선 대사로 임명했습니다.
페나요 드 두아르테 여사는 식량 안보 구상을 지원하고 지지했고, 또한 파라과이에서 여성과 빈민, 그리고 길거리 어린이들을 위한 건강과 인간 개발 프로그램에서 적극적인 역할을 수행했습니다.
1997년 세계 육상 선수권 대회 원반 던지기에서 우승한 비트리스 포무이나 씨는 남서 태평양 지역 여성으로는 처음으로 세계 선수권 대회에서 우승한 사람입니다.
로난 키팅 씨는 18살 때 가수 활동을 시작했습니다.
2004년 6월의 여행은 키팅 씨의 인생을 바꿔 놓았습니다. 아프리카의 가나와 다른 개발 도상국가들의 농민들과 그들의 가족들을 방문했던 키팅 씨는 그들의 빈곤과 불공정 무역법의 끔찍한 영향에 큰 충격을 받았습니다.
1999년 이후, 세계 식량 농업 기구 FAO의 친선 대사들은 세계의 기아 문제에 관심이 모아질 수 있도록 도움으로써 FAO 의 임무에 기여하고 있습니다.

More than 150 countries around the world are celebrating World Food Day, the October 16th anniversary of the founding of the U.N's Food and Agriculture Organization in 1945. Sabina Castelfranco reports from Rome.
INTRO: Over 6 million people have died from hunger and related diseases so far this year alone. More than 850 million people in the world do not have sufficient food.
The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization, FAO, has been working hard towards achieving the goal of reducing the number of hungry people in the world by half by 2015.
Today, the organization marked World Food Day and a special ceremony was held at its Rome headquarters.
ACT DIOUF, FRENCH FADE UNDER
FAO Director General Jacques Diouf says the theme chosen for this year's World Food Day, which is now 25 years old, is "Agriculture and intercultural dialogue: our common heritage".
He says dialogue across cultures makes it possible to adopt new knowledge. Dr. Diouf added that the world today has the resources and technology needed to produce enough food to meet growing demand and to eliminate the hunger of poor people.
Dr. Diouf appointed three new FAO Goodwill Ambassadors: Paraguay's First Lady Ms. Maria Gloria Penayod de Duarte, world athletic champion Beatrice Faumuina, from New Zealand and Irish singer Ronan Keating.
Ms. Penayo de Duarte, the first Extraordinary Ambassador for FAO, has supported and backed food security initiatives and played an active role in health and human development programs for women, poor people and street children in Paraguay.
Beatrice Faumuina was the first woman in the entire Southwest Pacific Region to win a World Championship title. In 1997 she struck gold at the discus throw.
Ronan Keating made his debut as a singer when he was 18. In June 2004 he made a trip that changed his life. He visited farmers and families in Ghana and other developing countries and was shocked by the sight of poverty and the terrible impact of unfair trade laws.
Since 1999, FAO Goodwill Ambassadors have contributed to the organization's mission by helping to put the spotlight on the problem of world hunger. (Signed)
