얀 에겔란트 유엔비상구호조정관은 파키스탄 캐쉬미르 지방의 상당부분을 폐허로 만든 대규모 지진의 피해자들의 구호가 시급하다고 밝히면서 구호단체들에게 고립된 피해지역들에 대한 구호작업을 신속하게 전개해줄 것을 촉구했습니다.
지진 발생 6일 후 피해지역을 방문한 에겔란트 조정관은 구호노력을 펴고 있는 수 백 개의 단체들을 상호조정할 필요가 있다고 말했습니다.
에겔란트 조정관은 지난 8일 2만5,000여 명의 사망자를 낸 것으로 알려진 진도 7.6의 대규모 지진이 발생한 후, 피난처도 없이 굶주림으로 고통을 받고 있는 사람들이 200 만 명이 넘는다고 말했습니다.
그는 피해지역의 15내지 20퍼센트는 아직도 구호의 손길이 미치지 않아 사망자 집계도 안된 상태라고 밝혔습니다.

The U.N.'s emergency relief chief says time is running out for many victims of the massive earthquake that demolished parts of Pakistani Kashmir, and he urged aid agencies to speed up work in remote villages.
U.N. Emergency Relief Coordinator Jan Egeland, visiting the region six days after the quake hit, says there is an urgent need to coordinate hundreds of organizations involved in the relief operation. He said he is concerned about small villages of northwestern Pakistan that have been cut off by blocked roads.
Mr. Egeland estimates more than two million people were left hungry and out in the open by Saturday's quake that Pakistani officials say killed more than 25,000 people. The officials say 15 to 20 percent of the affected area is yet to be reached to check on casualties.
In neighboring Indian Kashmir, officials say the death toll has risen above 14-hundred, and some 40-thousand homes close to the de facto border have been destroyed
