Voters in Poland are casting ballots today (Sunday) in the country's first presidential election since joining the European Union.

Public opinion surveys show a tight race between the two leading candidates, centrist lawmaker Donald Tusk and conservative Warsaw Mayor Lech Kaczynski.

Mr. Tusk has a slim lead, but neither front-runner is expected to win the 50 percent of the vote needed for an outright victory among 12 candidates. A run-off between the top two vote-getters would take place on October 23rd.

Mr. Tusk's Civic Platform party and Mr. Kaczynski's Law and Order party began coalition talks after they defeated the ruling leftist government in parliamentary elections two weeks ago. While the two parties are more conservative than the government they will replace, they differ on how much free-market and welfare reform Poland can afford.
