U.S. health officials are heading to Asia today (Saturday) to develop plans for global cooperation against bird flu, if the virus changes to a form that puts human populations at risk.

The chief of the United States' Department of Health and Human Services, Mike Leavitt, is leading a delegation that will visit Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos.

Broad cooperation by nations is necessary, Mr. Leavitt says, because it is inevitable that avian influenza will eventually mutate to a form that can spread rapidly among humans. Public-health experts say there is a real risk that the bird flu spreading through poultry flocks in Asia could become a global pandemic threatening the lives of millions of people.

A two-day international conference on bird flu wrapped up Friday in Washington, as President Bush met with major pharmaceutical companies on how to increase supplies of medicine to combat flu.

Reports continue to come in about new outbreaks of the virus in poultry flocks far from southeast Asia, where initial infections occurred.
