INTRODUCTION: As America's gasoline prices soar to record highs; consumers are considering alternative fuel sources. Most people have probably heard of hydrogen, electricity and ethanol, but cars can even run on chicken fat! VOA's Paige Kollock reports on functional and, now, inexpensive ways to fuel up.
NARRATOR: The latest United States Energy Department data shows regular unleaded gasoline averaging about 65 U-S cents a liter, with Americans importing about 60 percent of their oil. Don Ament, the Colorado Commissioner Of Agriculture, is promoting fuel made from corn grown in his state.
DON AMENT, CO. COMMISSIONER OF AGRICULTURE:
"We're improving the environment. We're providing another fuel source that makes us less dependent on, on fuel from other counties and we're giving agriculture a shot in the arm."
NARRATOR: Mr. Ament is promoting 'E-85' fuel, made predominately from corn oil, which is readily available. In some states, so is chicken fat. (nat sound chickens clucking) Chicken fat contains hydrocarbons, just like oil, and scientists say the conversion of chicken fat to fuel does not emit a fried chicken smell. Renewable Environmental Solutions president PJ Samson says, when it comes to fuel ideas, it does not stop there. PJ SAMSON: "Anything that was once a living thing, plant life or animals, can become fuel."
NARRATOR: Soybeans, pig fat, turkey fat, all can become what is generally known as biodiesel fuel. Joseph Jobe is with the National Biodiesel Board.
JOSEPH JOBE, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, NATIONAL BIODIESEL BOARD:
"Bio-diesel is something that can be made from any natural oil, vegetable oil or animal fat, and it is refined by reacting it with an alcohol to remove the glycerin, and the remaining compound acts chemically similar to diesel fuel in a diesel engine. It can be used in pure form or blended at any level."
NARRATOR: A company called Greasecar promotes vegetable oil for fuel. They say it can be produced in your own backyard or taken from restaurants, which give it away for free. A town in Sweden has gone even further. Gothenburg residents took their pollution problems into their own hands with the creation of bio-gas. Ronald Svensson manages the biogas center.
RONALD SVENSSON, HEAD OF DEVELOPMENT, GOTHENBURG BIOGAS CENTRE:
"We take care of organic waste from households, from food industry and sludge from sewage plants and we take care of this and make biogas of it and we use this biogas for our city buses, for garbage collecting cars and other cars."
NARRATOR: All of these alternative fuels are more environmentally friendly than gasoline. Studies show that consumers are slowly making the switch. The only obstacle that stands in their way is convenience, says Peter Bell, a partner in a company called Bio-Willie.
PETER BELL, BIO-WILLIE COMPANY:
"There are 187 thousand gas stations in America and there are probably only three or four hundred that carry bio-diesel. So it is not easy to get the fuel."
NARRATOR: That may change. The cost of most alternative fuels are similar to gasoline, but they are better for the environment, and alternative fuel advocates say, because they can be grown locally and reduce America's dependence on foreign oil.

벨씨는 미국에는 18만7천개의 주유소가 있지만, 그 중 3,4백개 주유소에서만이 바이오디젤을 취급하고 있을 것이라며, 이같은 상황에서는 바이오디젤을 사용하기가 쉽지 않다고 말합니다.
