이라크의 수도 바그다드에서 25일 벌어진 교전에서 미군이 최소한 8명의 저항 분자들을 사살했다고 관리들이 밝혔습니다.
바그다드 당국은 미군이 게릴라 공격을 자행한 것으로 의심되는 일단의 무장분자들을 체포하기 위해서 시아파 회교도들이 주로 거주하는 사드르 시티에 진입한 이후에 충돌이 일어났다고 말했습니다.
25일의 교전에서 사망한 무장분자들은 급진 시아파 회교 성직자 모크타다 알-사드르에 충성하는 단체인 메흐디 군 소속인 것으로 알려졌습니다. 다른 무장분자 5명은 부상했습니다.
이와는 별도로 바그다드 남쪽, 힐다의 한 번잡한 시장에서 자전거에 장착된 폭탄이 터져 최소한 한 명이 사망하고 수 십 명이 부상했다고 이라크 경찰이 밝혔습니다.
또한 바그다드 남동부에서 자살 폭탄 공격자가 이라크 경찰 특수부대 호송대를 공격해 최소한 5명의 경찰과 민간인 2명이 사망했습니다.
한편, 토니 블레어 영국 총리는 이라크 정부가 필요로 하는 한 영국군을 이라크에 계속 주둔시킬 것이라고 밝혔습니다. 블레어 총리는 25일 영국의 공영방송인 BBC에 출연해서 이라크 저항분자들의 만행에 놀라고 있지만 영국군은 이라크에서의 과업이 달성될 때 까지 계속 머무를 것이라고 말했습니다.
앞서 24일에는 수천명의 시위대들이 런던에서 반전 시위를 벌이고 이라크 주둔 영국군의 철수를 요구했습니다.

Officials in Iraq say U.S. troops killed at least eight insurgents during clashes today (Sunday) in Baghdad.
Authorities in the Iraqi capital say clashes broke out after U.S. soldiers moved into in Sadr City, a heavily populated Shi'ite Muslim district of Baghdad, to detain a group of fighters suspected of carrying out guerrilla attacks.
The militiamen killed in today's fighting are said to be part of the Mehdi Army, a group loyal to radical Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr. At least five other militiamen were wounded.
Separately, Iraqi police say a bomb mounted on a bicycle exploded (today) in a busy marketplace in Hilla, south of Baghdad, killing at least one person and wounding dozens of other.
And in southeastern Baghdad, a suicide car bomber struck a convoy of elite Iraqi police, killing at least five commandos and two civilians.
Meanwhile British Prime Minister Tony Blair says his country's troops will remain in Iraq as long as the Iraqi government needs them.
Mr. Blair told British radio (BBC) today (Sunday) that while he was surprised by the ferocity of resistance in Iraq, British troops would stay until the job is done.
On Saturday, thousands of people marched through London to protest the war and demand the withdrawal of British troops from Iraq.
