Hurricane Rita has weakened slightly today (Thursday) but remains a strong and intensely dangerous storm threatening the U.S. states of Texas and Louisiana.
President Bush says authorities are "preparing for the worst" as the huge storm moves through the Gulf of Mexico with winds now measured at 240 kilometers per hour.
The hurricane has been moving more north than west, raising the possibility it will deliver a strong blow to Louisiana, where many cities are still recovering from Hurricane Katrina.
Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco urged people in coastal areas to evacuate, and officials in New Orleans say the city may flood again if Rita brings heavy rain and a storm surge.
In Texas, highways have been jammed with hundreds of thousands of motorists fleeing Galveston, Houston and other cities in the storm's expected path.
