Election officials in Afghanistan say early estimates show around six million people, or just over 50 percent of voters, cast ballots in national assembly and local council elections Sunday.
This is lower than last year's presidential election, when more than seven million people cast ballots.
Afghans voted despite threats of Taleban violence. Officials say several people were killed in the hours before polls opened in scattered attempts to sabotage the election.
Police also say a roadside bomb blast in eastern Nangarhar province late Sunday hit a truck carrying ballot boxes, but there were no injuries and the ballots were not damaged.
Vote counting is expected to begin Tuesday. But officials say it could take weeks to count the millions of multi-page ballots.
Nearly six-thousand candidates competed for seats in the national assembly or on 34 provincial councils.
