The head of the federal relief effort in the U.S. Gulf Coast has warned New Orleans residents of health risks and hardships if they return, and asked people to wait until conditions are more livable.
In a statement issued Saturday, Coast Guard Vice Admiral Thad Allen cast doubt on a plan for 180-thousand evacuees from New Orleans to return to the hurricane-ravaged city,
New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin had called for parts of the city to re-open over the next two weeks. But Vice Admiral Allen told the Associated Press that Mr. Nagin's idea is extremely "ambitious" and "problematic" because of polluted floodwaters, lack of drinkable water and weakened levees.
