The death toll from Hurricane Katrina now stands at more than 650, including 423 in Louisiana alone.
Authorities continue to patrol the streets of flood-ravaged New Orleans to collect the bodies of those who died in the storm. But the slow pace of recovery caused Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco to lash out at the Federal Emergency Management Agency on Tuesday. Governor Blanco says her state will hire a private contractor to take over body recovery duties from FEMA.
Meanwhile, the first major criminal case related to Katrina was announced on Tuesday. The owners of a New Orleans-area nursing home where 34 people died in the floodwaters have been charged with homicide. The state's attorney general says they ignored warnings to evacuate the patients.
