Egypt's political opposition is challenging President Hosni Mubarak's overwhelming election victory.

Mr. Mubarak, who has been in power for 24 years, won another six-year term in the election -- the first time that Egypt has allowed multiple candidates to seek the presidency. The official election commission said turnout was low -- less than one-quarter of the country's 32 million voters -- but the 77-year-old president won 88 percent of the ballots.

Mr. Mubarak's opponents contend the election was seriously flawed. Ghad Party leader Ayman Nour, who finished a distant second (with 7.3 percent), says he will try to have the vote overturned. Wafd Party chairman Numan Gumaa, who came in third, accused the government of tampering with the results.

Independent monitors and Western news agencies reported there were numerous irregularities, but election officials have rejected opposition demands for a re-run vote.
