State media in Egypt say President Hosni Mubarak has been overwhelmingly re-elected in the nation's first contested presidential election.
The state-run newspaper al-Gomhuria said today (Friday) unofficial estimates indicate Mr. Mubarak won at least 80 percent of the votes. Ayman Nour of the liberal Ghad Party came in second.
Election officials say they expect to publish official results later today.
On Thursday, Egypt's election commission rejected Mr. Nour's demand for a new vote for what he claimed were procedural irregularities and other fraud.
Independent monitors and Western news agencies also reported multiple problems with Wednesday's election, including vote-buying and intimidation.
A State Department spokesman (Sean McCormack) said Thursday there were issues with the presidential election. He says Washington will comment further after votes are tallied and the election process is analyzed.
