Japan says it will release more than seven million barrels of oil over the next 30 days to ease the U.S. supply shortages caused by Hurricane Katrina. Tokyo says the daily release of 200-thousand barrels of crude oil and refined oil products from its private-sector reserves will begin on Wednesday.

Japan's move is part of the International Energy Agency's plan for its 26 member states to release two million barrels of oil a day over an initial 30 days to make up for the loss of oil refineries in the U.S. Gulf Coast due to Katrina.

The last time Japan tapped its emergency reserves was during the 1991 Gulf War.
