The southern U.S. city of New Orleans is facing a new threat from Hurricane Katrina, as a damaged levee is causing water to flood several sections of the city.
Water is now flooding parts of the downtown business section and the city's historic French Quarter, and water levels there are much higher now they they were when the storm slammed the Gulf Coast Monday. Authorities
are dropping sandbags on the area.
New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin says at least 80 percent of the city is already flooded, and that the death toll will be "significant."
Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco said the city lacks drinkable tap water. Reporters on the scene say there are still hundreds of people sitting on their rooftops waiting to be rescued.
In the Mississippi coastal city of Biloxi, a city spokesman said hundreds of people may have been killed when a 9-meter storm surge came ashore Monday. Biloxi Mayor A.J. Hollaway said "This is our tsunami."
Authorities are continuing emergency rescue efforts in Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi. Some 7,500 National Guard Troops are on duty, supporting civil authorities, providing medical care and setting up shelter for displaced residents.
