로마 카톨릭교 교황 베네딕트 16세는 전 세계 각국 백여만명의 카톨릭 신자들이 참가한 가운데 카톨릭 청소년들의 축제가 열린 독일 쾰른 방문을 마치고 로마로 돌아갔습니다.
베네딕트 16세는 젊은 카톨릭 신자들에게 교회의 가르침을 선별적으로 따르는 자의적인 종교가 아니라 충심을 다해 신앙을 실천할 것을 촉구했습니다.
올해 78세인 베네딕트 16세의 이번 고국 방문은 지난 4월 교황 요한 바오로 2세가 서거한 뒤 교황으로 취임한 이래 첫 해외 여행입니다.
고 요한 바오로 2세와 마찬가지로 다양한 외국어 구사 능력을 갖춘 베네딕트 16세는 행사 폐막미사에 모인 각국 카톨릭 청소년들에게 9개국어로 설교했습니다.
세계 청소년의 날은 보통 3년마다 한번씩 일주일 일정으로 열리는데 이번 행사에는 200여개국에서 카톨릭 신자들이 참가했습니다. 다음번 행사는 2008년 호주 시드니에서 열리게 됩니다.

Pope Benedict is back in Rome from Cologne, Germany, where his visit to the Roman Catholic Church's world youth festival ended with a joyful Mass attended by one million worshippers.
Benedict urged young Catholics to practice their faith in full, rather than what he called "do-it-yourself" religion -- selectively choosing which church teachings to follow.
The 78-year-old pope's visit to his homeland was his first trip outside Italy and the Vatican since he was chosen in April to succeed the late Pope John Paul II. Displaying a range of language skills nearly as wide-ranging as his Polish-born predecessor, Benedict delivered his final blessing to the throng of young people in nine languages (including Swahili, Tagalog, Spanish and Polish).
Catholics from more than 200 countries took part in "World Youth Day," a weeklong gathering usually held once every three years. The next festival will be in Sydney (Australia) in 2008.
