Russia has called on the international community to make a joint effort to halt the spread of the bird flu virus.

Top Russian veterinarian Yevgeny Nepoklonov today (Monday) said bird flu, which is potentially fatal to humans, is not a problem to be dealt with solely on a national level. He said an international effort is needed to halt the spread of the virus.

Mr. Nepoklonov, deputy head of Russia's veterinary service, says migratory wild birds could carry the disease to any part of the world. He urged international financial institutions, such as the World Bank, to fund efforts to stop the virus from spreading across the planet.

Officials in Moscow say the illness has not yet spread to humans in Russia. At least 60 people in southeast Asia have died from bird flu since 2003.
