교황 베네딕트 16세가 19일 전 나찌에 대파되었던 유대교회당을 방문해 기독교인들과 유대인들이 독선과 증오심에 맞서 단합해 싸울것을 촉구했습니다.
독일태생으로 유대교회당을 방문한 사상 두번째 로마교황인 베네딕트 16세교황은 퀠른에서, 신앙을 가진 자들은 제2차세계대전중 유대인 대학살을 야기했던 비이성적인 인종차별적 이념에 저항해야 할것이라고 말했습니다.
베네딕트16세 교황은 유대교회당에서 유대교 성직자들의 히뷰루어 기도를 경청했습니다. 이 유대교 회당은 지난 1938년 ‘크리스탈나하트’로 알려진 반 유대인 폭도들의 시위중 나찌에 의해 파괴됐으며 1950년대에 재건 되었습니다. 쾔른의 유대인들은 이날 교황의 방문을 영광으로 생각한다고 말했습니다.
교황 베네딕트 16세는 앞서 본에서 호르스트 퀠러 독일 대통령을 만났으며 20일에는 회교 지도자들을 만날 예정입니다.

Pope Benedict paid a historic visit today (Friday) to a synagogue in Germany once destroyed by the Nazis, calling on Christians and Jews to unite against bigotry and hatred.
The German-born pope -- only the second Roman Catholic church leader ever to enter a Jewish house of worship -- said in Cologne that people of faith must resist what he called the "insane racist ideology" that led to the Holocaust during the last world war.
Pope Benedict, whose visit to his homeland is his first official foreign trip (since he assumed the papacy in April), listened intently as Jewish leaders offered a Hebrew prayer at the synagogue. The temple was
destroyed by Nazis in 1938 during the anti-Jewish riots known as Kristallnacht, and was not rebuilt until the 1950s.
Members of Cologne's Jewish community say they are honored by the pope's visit. The pontiff came to Germany to celebrate World Youth Day, a gathering of young Catholics from around the world.
