Iraq's Parliament speaker has ordered a special session of the National Assembly today (Monday), but with that meeting about to begin, there is no word whether a new national constitution will be completed in time for the lawmakers' review.Leaders of Iraq's Sunni Muslim, Shi'ite and Kurdish communities are working against the clock in their efforts to reach a compromise agreement on the new charter.
The VOA correspondent in Baghdad says senior representatives of Iraq's divided ethnic and religious groups met for hours today in the capital (at the residence of Shi'ite leader Abdul Aziz al-Hakim), trying to reach a consensus on several key issues. If those talks are not concluded before the National Assembly session (set to begin at 14 hours UTC [6 p.m. local]), lawmakers may have to act to extend the statutory (August 15) deadline they set for presentation of a draft constitution.
A security cordon surrounded the hall where lawmakers meet in the capital's "Green Zone."
Meanwhile, a mortar shell that hit an Interior Ministry building in eastern Baghdad wounded several people today. And Iraqi authorities say they found the bodies of 30 people, including two women, in a mass grave (20 kilometers) south of Baghdad. Police arrested at least 13 people and killed one suspect in connection with the find.
