German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder has called for taking any military option against Iran "off the table," in response to Tehran's resumption of its nuclear program..
Speaking Saturday at a rally to kick off his re-election campaign in his northern hometown of Hanover, Mr. Schroeder called the use of force against Iran "unsuitable."
His comments came after President Bush refused to rule out the use of force against Iran if European-led diplomacy fails to make Tehran abandon its nuclear ambitions.
Chancellor Schroeder's Social-Democratic Party trails the Christian-Democratic opposition by about 15 percentage points in opinion polls ahead of the September 18th parliamentary elections.
Mr. Schroeder overcame dismal poll ratings to win a second term in 2002 after strongly opposing U.S. plans for military action in Iraq.
