The 35-nation board of the International Atomic Energy Agency has unanimously adopted a resolution demanding that Iran suspend all nuclear activities it resumed this week.
The resolution, drafted by Britain, France and Germany, expresses serious concern about Iran's move to resume converting uranium that could be used to make nuclear weapons.
It stops short of referring the European case to the United Nations Security Council for possible sanctions. But it calls on Iran to suspend all activities related to the nuclear fuel cycle, and it asks IAEA inspectors to verify Iran's compliance by September third.
Tehran says the resolution violates its rights under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty because it precludes converting uranium to low-grade fuel for nuclear reactors.
The United States and the European Union say they suspect Iran wants to convert uranium to high-grade fuel needed for nuclear weapons. Iran has repeatedly denied the charges.
