Scientists have completed a genetic map of the rice plant, a discovery that could significantly improve efforts to feed the hungry.
The achievement is reported in the journal Nature, after eight years of work by researchers from 10 countries, led by scientists in Japan.
Scientists say a genetic map of rice could allow researchers to create strains that are resistance to drought and disease.
Experts say more than half of the world's population eats rice in their daily diet. They project that demand for rice will increase 30 percent over the next two decades as the global population continues to grow.
The mapping of the genetic blueprint of rice comes two years after researchers completed a human genetic map -- known as the Human Genome Project.
