The U.S. military says 14 American Marines and a civilian interpreter have been killed in western Iraq.
The military said the Marines were killed today (Wednesday) when their vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb during combat operations south of the town of Haditha, near the Syrian border.
Earlier this week, six U.S. Marines were killed in an insurgent ambush in Haditha, while another Marine died in a bomb blast in the town of Hit to the south.
Elsewhere, unknown assailants have shot and killed American freelance journalist Steven Vincent in the southern city of Basra.
Police say the journalist and his Iraqi translator were kidnapped Tuesday. Authorities say both were shot -- Mr. Vincent died but the translator survived.
Mr. Vincent was the author of a book on Iraq (In the Red Zone - A Journey Into the Soul of Iraq), and was also working on another book on the history of Basra.
