인민 해방 운동은 2일, 최근까지 이 반군단체의 정치적 지도자였던 존 가랑 수단 부통령의 사망에 따라 애도 기간을 시작했습니다.
반군지도자 출신인 가랑 부통령과 그 일행 13명은 지난 30일 헬리콥터 추락사고로 사망했습니다.
수단 수도 카루툼에는 가랑 부통령의 사망 소식으로 인해 1일 촉발된 소요 사태가 더 확산되는 것을 방지하기 위해 저녁부터 다음날 새벽까지 야간 통행 금지령이 내려져 있습니다.
가랑 부통령은 지난 21년간의 내전을 종식하기 위해 수단 정부와 남부 반군간에 올해 초 이루어진 평화 협정의 핵심 인물이었습니다.
한편 전세계 지도자들은 수단 국민들에게 가랑 부통령의 사망에 뒤이어 수단의 평화 과정을 계속할 것을 촉구했습니다.

The Sudan People's Liberation Movement says funeral services for its late political leader, Sudanese Vice President John Garang, will be held in Juba, the planned capital of an autonomous southern Sudan.
It is unclear when the funeral will be held. Mr. Garang's political party says the body of the former rebel leader is lying at New Site in Southern Sudan.
The Movement has begun a period of mourning today (Tuesday) for its late political leader, Sudanese Vice President John Garang.
Mr. Garang and 13 others died in a helicopter crash Saturday evening.
Sudan's government issued a dusk to dawn curfew in order to prevent a wave of riots that erupted Monday in the capital, Khartoum, in reaction to news of the former rebel leader's death. At least 36 people were killed during the violence.
Mr. Garang was a key figure in a peace accord reached earlier this year between the Sudanese government and southern rebels to end a 21 year civil war.
Sudanese President Omar el-Bashir, and General Salva Kiir, who was immediately elected (by the SPLM) to succeed Mr. Garang, have stressed that his death would not stop the peace movement.
