북아일랜드 아일랜드공화군, IRA가 35년째 계속해온 무장 투쟁을 종식하겠다고 다짐한 뒤를 이어 영국은 북아일랜드내 일부 자체 군 전초기지들을 철거하기 시작했습니다.
영국군 대변인은 29일 벨파스트에서 영국군 병사들이 서남쪽으로 50킬로미터쯤 떨어진 남 아르마 지역내 3개의 군감시 전망대를 제거하기 시작했다고 밝혔습니다.
이 같은 움직임은 IRA 지도자들이 휘하 조직들에게 무장을 해제할 것을 촉구한 지 하룻만에 나왔습니다.
앞서 28일 IRA는 성명을 통해 평화적인 수단을 통해 북아일랜드 독립을 추구하겠다고 밝혔습니다.
한편 백악관 대변인은 29일 조지 부쉬 대통령이 IRA의 정치 조직인 신페인 당의 제리 애담스 당수에게 전화를 걸어 이 같은 역사적인 기회 포착의 중요성을 강조하면서 북아일랜드 주민들이 평화를 달성할 수 있도록 미국의 지속적인 지원을 다짐했다고 전했습니다.

Britain has begun dismantling some of its military outposts in Northern Ireland, following a pledge by the Irish Republican Army to abandon its 35-year old campaign of violence.
A British army spokesman today (Friday) said soldiers have started to remove three hilltop observation towers in south Armagh, about 50 kilometers southwest of Belfast.
The move comes one day after IRA leaders called on its members to disarm. In a statement released Thursday,the group said it would use exclusively peaceful means in its efforts to free Northern Ireland from British rule.
Also today (Friday), a White House spokesman said President Bush telephoned the head of the IRA's political arm, Gerry Adams. He said Mr. Bush relayed the importance of seizing this historic opportunity, and pledged
continued U.S. support to help achieve peace for the people of Northern Ireland.
