중국 정부는 중국산 맥주에 건강상 심각한 위험을 초래할 정도의 포름알데히드 방부제가 첨가되어 있다는 주장에 대해 자국 주류 산업을 옹호하고 나섰습니다.
중국 관영 신화 통신은 정부의 품질 감독 조사청이 이같은 주장에 대한 조사에 나서 자국 맥주 제조 회사 150여개의 제품과 64개 외국 회사의 수입 맥주를 비교한 결과, 양측 맥주에 동일한 양의 포름알데히드가 첨가되어 있으며, 이 함량은 세계 무역 기구가 설정한 수준치 제한보다 낮은 것으로 규명했다고 보도했습니다.
앞서 한 신문 보도는 중국산 맥주가 가공 과정에서 불법 양의 포름알데히드를 첨가하고 있으며 이같은 수준의 방부제 첨가는 암을 유발할 잠재성이 있다고 전했습니다.

China is defending its beer brewing industry against claims that the beverages are loaded with enough formaldehyde to pose serious health risks to consumers.
The Xinhua news agency says China's quality control agency (State Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine) has investigated the allegation.
The agency studied products from more than 150 domestic beer companies and compared them to beer made by 64 imported competitors.
The quality watchdog found the formaldehyde content in the domestic beer to be comparable to the imported
brands and lower than the maximum limit set by the World Trade Organization.
The investigation stems from a newspaper report that said Chinese breweries have been using illegal amounts
of formaldehyde in the processing of their beer and that the levels are potentially cancer-causing.
Xinhua quotes an official with the quality control agency as saying the report is irresponsible and untrue.
