샌드라 데이 오코너 미국 연방대법원 판사가 24년의 재직 끝에 은퇴한다고 발표한 후 워싱턴 정가에서는 차기 판사 지명을 놓고 공화 민주 양당의 대결 구도가 형성되고 있습니다.
부쉬 대통령은 보좌관들과 긴밀하게 협의하겠다고 밝히면서 판사 후보 지명은 다음 주로 예정된 선진 8개국 정상회담에 참석하고 돌아오기 전까지는 발표하지 않을 것이라고 말했습니다.
중도 보수성향의 오코너 판사는 낙태 등 논란이 많은 문제에 대한 표결에서 자주 결정적인 표를 행사해 왔습니다. 올해 75세의 오코너 판사는 아홉 명으로 구성된 연방 대법원 판사 가운데 최초이자 유일한 여성 판사로 활동해 왔습니다.
부쉬 대통령은 앞서 안토닌 스칼라, 클레렌스 토마스를 포함한 강력한 보수파 고등법원 판사들을 가장 존경한다고 말한바 있습니다.
많은 보수파 인사들은 낙태와 같은 쟁점들에 대해 대법원의 과반수 자리를 우파인사들로 채울수 있는 절호의 기회로 보고 있습니다.
진보파는 더욱 보수적인 인사가 오코너 대법관의 후임으로 선정될 경우 민권이라든가 여성의 권리등에 후퇴를 가져올 것이라고 우려하고 있습니다.

A political battle is building in Washington in the wake of Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor's decision to retire after 24 years on the United States' high court.
President Bush says he will consult closely with advisers and does not expect to announce a nominee until after returning from next week's Group of Eight summit (meeting in Scotland).
The president has said previously he most adrmires the high-court's staunch conservatives including Justices, Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas.
Many conservatives see a major opportunity to shift the court's majority bloc to the right on issues such as abortion. Justice O'Connor cast key votes to affirm the legality of abortion, despite her personal oppostion to the procedure.
Liberal groups are concerned that a more conservative successor will set back progress on civil rights and women's rights.
