미국은 앞으로 5년간 아프리카에 대한 미국의 지원금을 86억 원으로 배증할 것이라고 조지 부쉬 대통령이 밝혔습니다.
미국의 새로운 아프리카 지원 계획의 핵심 목표는 말라리아 퇴치입니다.
부쉬 대통령은 다음 주에 열릴 선진 8개국의 연례 회담인 G-8 정상회담에 앞서 30일, 이같은 계획을 발표했습니다.
스코트랜드에서 열릴 이번 정상회담에서는 아프리카 개발 문제가 주요 현안으로 논의될 예정입니다.
부쉬 대통령은 미국이 지원하는 공공 보건 계획은 아프리카에서 말라리아로 인한 사망률을 50퍼센트까지 낮추는 것을 목표로 하고 있다고 말했습니다. 현재 아프리카에서는 말라리아로 매년 백만명 이상이 사망하고 있으며, 이들중 많은 수는 어린이들 입니다.

President Bush says the United States will double the billions of dollars in aid it sends to Africa, raising its annual contribution to 8.6 billion dollars over the next five years (by 2010).
Fighting malaria is a key goal of the new aid package. Mr. Bush announced the plan (Thursday) in advance of next week's G-8 summit meeting -- the annual gathering of leaders of the world's leading industrialized nations,the Group of Eight. This year's meeting, in Scotland, will focus heavily on African development.
The president says U.S.-funded public health programs aim to reduce the death toll of malaria by 50 percent in Africa. Currently the disease kills more than 1 million people every year, many of them children.The president says the leaders gathering next week also will discuss Iraq, the environment and the Middle East, as well as issues related to the European Union. Mr. Bush says America wants to see Europe succeed as a continent that is free, whole at peace and growing.
