사이판에 거주하는 한인들은 아키히토 일왕 부처의 추념 평화탑 방문을 요구해 왔습니다.
사이판 한인 교민 단체의 회장은 아키히토 일황의 평화탑 방문이 한국과 일본의 관계를 개선하는 계기가 되기를 바란다고 밝혔습니다.
지난 1944년 6월 미군이 사이판 상륙 작전을 벌인 이래로 3주간 이어진 미군과 일본군과의 참혹한 전투에서 일본인 병사와 민간인 5만 여명이 사망했습니다. 한국인은 천 백 명, 미국인은 5천 여명이 사망했습니다.
사망자들 가운데 많은 일본인들은 이른바 만세 절벽으로 불리는 가파른 절벽에서 뛰어내려 스스로 목숨을 끊었습니다.

Japan's Emperor Akihito has left the U.S. territory of Saipan, after making a surprise visit to a memorial honoring Koreans who died during World War Two.The emperor was accompanied by Empress Michiko on the unscheduled stop early today (Tuesday).
Korean residents on Saipan had urged the royal couple to visit the memorial.

says Akihito's visit to the memorial will go a long way toward improving relations between Korea and Japan.
More than 50-thousand Japanese soldiers and civilians died during three weeks of brutal fighting after U.S. forces invaded the island in June of 1944. Many of the Japanese who died committed suicide by jumping off the island's steep cliffs.
