일본의 아키히토 국왕이 제 2차 세계대전 희생자들의 영령을 위로하기 위해 생애 처음으로 일본을 떠나 미국령 사이판섬을 방문중입니다.
아키히토 국왕은 3주동안의 치열한 전투끝에 일본군 수만명이 목숨을 잃은 격전지인 사이판섬에 있는 여러 전쟁 기념지를 방문할 계획입니다.
당시 전투는 1944년 7월, 사이판 섬이 미국에 넘어가면서 끝났습니다. 도쿄를 떠나기 앞서 발표한 성명에서 아키히토 천황은, 오늘의 일본은 해외에서 목숨을 잃은 이들의 희생위에 세워진 것이라면서 일본은 다시 한번 전쟁중에 목숨을 잃은 모든이들을 추모하고 기릴 것이라고 말했습니다.
아키히토 국왕은 수천명의 미군을 포함해 모든 전몰자들의 영령을 기리며, 세계 평화를 위해서도 기도할 것이라고 말했습니다.
한편 현지의 일부 한인 단체들은 아키히토 천황이 싸이판 섬에 있는 한국인 위령비를 방문하지 않는다는 소식에 항의 시위를 벌일 것이라고 말했습니다.

Japan's Emperor Akihito is in the U.S. territory of Saipan on his first trip outside Japan to mourn victims of World War Two.
The Emperor plans to visit several war memorials on Saipan, the scene of three weeks of brutal fighting that killed tens of thousands of Japanese. The battle ended in July, 1944 with Saipan in U.S. hands.
In a statement before leaving Tokyo, Emperor Akihito said -- in his words -- "This time on soil beyond our shores, we will once again mourn and pay tribute to all those who lost their lives in the war."
The emperor is to honor all war dead on Saipan, including thousands of American troops killed in battle. He says he will also pray for world peace.
