Relatives of Japanese abducted by North Korean agents in the 1970s and 80s have begun a three-day sit-in near the prime minister's office in Tokyo, demanding sanctions against Pyongyang.Many of the more than 100 relatives and their supporters say they do not believe the North's assertion that eight of the 13 Japanese North Korea has admitted to abducting are dead. The five others were allowed to return to Japan in 2002.
North Korea snatched the Japanese from coastal communities and used them to teach spies about Japan's language and culture.
Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi rebuffed the calls for sanctions today (Friday), saying he prefers dialogue.
North Korea has said it would consider sanctions tantamount to a declaration of war.
