The U.S. military in Afghanistan says its warplanes and attack helicopters have killed 15 to 20 suspected Taleban rebels after a coalition convoy came under attack.
The military statement says the airstrikes were launched today (Sunday) in southern Helmand province after a patrol reported being pinned down by small-arms and rocket-propelled grenade fire.
The statement says no coalition forces were injured in the incident.
Also Sunday, Taleban militants in the southern Kandahar province claimed to have executed a district police chief and seven others, who were among 31 people captured during a raid on the government's district headquarters.
A Taleban spokesman said the police chief was killed on orders from the group's religious leaders, while the other seven were tried and executed for supporting the U.S.-backed Kabul government.
Local officials said they were not able to confirm the claim.
