부쉬 미 대통령은 랑군에 있는 가택에서 연금상태로 19일 회갑을 맞는 버마의 민주운동가 아웅산 수지 여사에게 축하 멧세지를 보냈습니다.
부쉬 대통령은 17일 성명서에서 아웅산 수지 여사의 힘과 용기와 개인적 희생에 경의를 표했습니다.
한편 톰 랜토스 미 연방하원의원은 아웅산 수지 여사에개 보내는 우편물 수천 점이 담겨 있는 상자를 워싱턴에 있는 미국주재 버마 대사관에 전달했습니다. 그러나 대사관측에서는 아무도 건물밖으로 나오지 않아 랜토스 의원은 상자를 밖에 놓았습니다.
아웅산 수지 여사는 민주주의와 인권을 위한 비폭력 투쟁으로 지난 1991년 노벨 평화상을 수상했습니다.
아웅산 수지 여사가 이끄는 민족 민주동맹은 1990년 버마 국회의원 선거에서 압도적으로 승리했지만 버마 군사 평의회는 승리한 후보들의 국회 등원을 허락하지 않았습니다.

President Bush has sent his best wishes to Burmese opposition activist Aung San Suu Kyi, as she prepares to spend her 60th birthday Sunday under house arrest at her Rangoon home.
In a statement Friday, Mr. Bush paid tribute to the "strength, courage, and personal sacrifice" of the Burmese pro-democracy leader.
U.S. Congressman Tom Lantos delivered to the Burmese Embassy in Washington a box containing thousands of pieces of mail to Aung San Suu Kyi. Nobody came out of the building. He left the box outside.
Aung San Suu Kyi won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991 for her nonviolent struggle for democracy and human rights. Her pro-democracy party won a landslide victory in 1990 elections, but Burma's military junta never allowed the winners to take office.
