조지 부시 미국 대통령과 토니 블레어 영국 총리는 아프리카 부채 경감에 관한 합의에 접근했다고 밝혔습니다.
부시 대통령과 블레어 총리는 7일 워싱턴에서 정상회담을 갖고 아프리카 개발 지원을 중점 논의한 다음 기자회견에서 이렇게 말했습니다.
블레어 총리는 다음 달 7월에 스코틀랜드에서 열리는 주요 8개 국가(G-8) 정상회의에서 아프리카 원조를 중심 현안으로 삼을 계획입니다.
부시 대통령은 미국과 영국이 세계은행 같은 대출 기관들에 대한 영향을 최소화 하면서 가장 가난한 아프리카 나라들의 채무를 전면 탕감해 주는 계획을 고려하고 있다고 말했습니다.
부시 대통령은 아프리카에 대한 미국의 직접 지원을 크게 늘리기를 원하지 않는다고 밝혔지만, 세계적인 긴급 상황에 대비해 책정한 6억 7천 4백만 달러를 아프리카의 인도주의 지원을 위해 사용할 것이라고 말했습니다.
블레어 총리는 오는 2010년까지 대 아프리카 지원을 갑절로 늘리는 계획에 대한 선진국들의 지지를 호소해 왔습니다.

President Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair say they are close to an agreement on debt relief for Africa. Mr. Bush and Mr. Blair spoke to reporters Tuesday in Washington after talks focusing on African development assistance -- which the British leader plans to make a centerpiece of next month's G8 summit in Scotland.
The president said the United States and Britain are developing a proposal that would cancel the entire debt of the poorest African countries -- while minimizing the impact of such a move on lending institutions like the World Bank.
Mr. Bush said he does not want to significantly increase direct U.S. aid to Africa, but he did announce that 674-million dollars set aside for global emergency situations will go to Africa to meet humanitarian needs.
Mr. Blair has been asking developed countries to support an initiative that would double aid to Africa by 2010.
