망명중인 파키스탄의 저명한 야당 지도자며 부나지르 부토 전 총리의 남편인 아시프 알리 자르다리씨가 아랍 에미리트 공화국에서 심장 마비를 일으킨 것으로 알려졌습니다.
부토 전 총리의 파키스탄 인민당 대변인은 자르다리 씨가 지난 3일 두바이의 한 병원에 입원했으며 현재 회복중에 있다고 밝혔습니다. 자르다이씨는 1999년 이후 스스로 두바이로 망명해 살고 있는 부인 베나지르 부토 전 총리를 만나기 위해 지난 달 두바이를 방문했습니다.
자르다이씨는 부패에서부터 살인에 이르기 까지 다양한 혐의의 재판을 기다리는 가운데 8년을 복역한 뒤인 지난 해 11월 보석으로 석방됐습니다. 지난 4월 파키스탄 보안군은 자르다이 씨를 임시 가택 연금시켰으며 자르다이씨가 두바이에서 귀국한 이후 그의 지지자 수천명을 구금했습니다.
정부의 그 같은 노력에도 불구하고 자르다이씨는 파키스탄에 자유롭고 공정한 선거와 민주주의를 건설하기 위한 노력을 계속할 것이라고 다짐하고 있습니다.

A prominent Pakistani opposition leader-in-exile and the husband of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto has suffered a heart attack in the United Arab Emirates.
A spokesman for Mrs. Bhutto's Pakistan People's Party says Asif Ali Zardari was hospitalized Friday and is now recovering in Dubai.
Mr. Zardari traveled to Dubai last month to meet with his wife who has lived there in self-imposed exile since 1999. He was released on bail last November after eight years in jail awaiting trial on charges ranging from corruption to murder.
In April, Pakistani security forces placed him under temporary house arrest and detained thousands of his supporters following his return from Dubai.
Despite the government efforts, Mr. Zardari vows to continue to push for free and fair elections and democracy in Pakistan.
