자끄 시라크 프랑스 대통령은 유럽 연합 가입국 정상들에게 서한을 보내 프랑스의 국민투표에서 유럽 헌법이 거부된 결과를 시간을 두고 분석하라고 요청했습니다.
1일 공개된 서한에서 시라크 대통령은 유럽 연합 지도자들은 이달중 브룻셀에서 열리는 정상회의 준비작업을 시작해야 할 것이라고 말했습니다.
시라크 대통령은 이들에게 프랑스는 25개 회원국을 가진 유럽연합을 여전히 지지한다고 말하고 다른 회원국들은 비준 과정을 계속해야 한다고 강조했습니다.
현재까지 유럽 연합 회원국중 9개국만이 조약을 비준했으며 헌법이 효력을 발생하려면 25개국 모두의 비준이 필요합니다. 지난 29일 실시된 프랑스의 국민투표에서 유럽헌법은 거의 55%의 반대로 부결됐습니다.

French President Jacques Chirac has written a letter to his European Union counterparts asking them to take time to analyze the consequences of France's rejection of the EU constitution.
In the letter released today (Wednesday), Mr. Chirac writes that EU leaders should begin the process at a summit meeting later this month in Brussels.
Mr. Chirac tried to reassure his colleagues that France remains committed to the 25-nation bloc and said the ratification process should continue in other EU member countries.
So far, nine EU countries have ratified the treaty but it needs approval from all 25 for it to take effect.
Nearly 55-percent of French voters said "no" to the constitution in Sunday's referendum.
