Newsweek magazine has apologized for possible errors in a report alleging U.S. interrogators at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, desecrated the Muslim Holy book, the Koran. But the magazine stopped short of retracting the piece.
The May ninth Newsweek report said American guards at Guantanamo had flushed the Koran down a toilet to upset Muslim prisoners they were interrogating. The report sparked violent protests in several countries, including Pakistan, India and Afghanistan -- where at least 17 people were killed. In its apology, Newsweek said it learned of the alleged incident from what it called "a knowledgeable U.S. government source.
" The magazine says that source originally said he read of the Koran desecration in a U.S. military report on mistreatment of prisoners at the base. Newsweek says the source now says he is not certain he read of the incident in THAT report. The Defense Department responded angrily to Newsweek's apology, citing the damage done by the story.
The U.S. military says it has seen no credible evidence that the Koran was desecrated to get Muslim terror suspects to talk.
