아프리카연합, AU는 앞으로 수단의 서부 다르푸르지역의 평화유지군 병력을 대폭 증강할 계획입니다. 평화유지군 병력은 현재의 약 3,300명에서 7,700명으로 2배 이상 늘어날 것입니다.
케냐와 르완다, 나이지리아, 그리고 세네갈이 다프르 지역에 추가 병력을 파견할 예정입니다. 아프리카연합은 또한 53개 회원국들과 다른 나라들에게 자금과 장비 지원을 호소하고 있습니다. 미국은 다르푸르지역의 아프리카연합 평화유지군 임무를 지원하기 위해 이미 9,500만 달러를 지원했습니다. 유럽연합, EU는 기획 및 병참 지원에 1,200만 달러를 제공함으로써 다르푸르의 아프리카연합 평화유지군의 임무를 지원하고 있습니다.

아프리카연합 평화유지군이 주둔하는 곳에는 비교적 불안정이 덜한 편이라면서 티암대변인은 불안정은 또한 많은 지역들이 제대로 보호받지 못하는 데서 비롯된다고 말했습니다.
지난 2003년 수단의 서부 다르푸르지역에서 내전이 발발했습니다. 아랍계 수단 인들의 차별대우에 불만을 품은 아프리카계 반군들이 정부 시설들을 공격했습니다.
수단 정부의 지원을 받는 수단의 아랍 잔자위드 민병대는 다르푸르의 아프리카계 푸르 족과 마사이 족, 자가와 족을 공격함으로써 이에 대응했습니다.
이 와중에서 수많은 민간인들이 희생됐으며, 또 폭력과 여성들에 대한 성폭행 보도도 잇따르고 있습니다. 현재 다르푸르 지역에서는 100여만명의 실향민들이 발생했으며, 이밖에 대략 20여만명이 이웃나라 차드에서 난민으로 살아가고 있습니다.
올해에 수단 정부 대표와 반군 [수단인민해방운동]이 평화협정에 서명했습니다. 이 협정은 수단의 지방분권화와 석유자원의 공유를 촉구하고 있습니다.
미 국무부의 리차드 바우처 대변인은 “현재 다르푸르 지역의 충돌 건수와 규모는 줄어들고 있지만, 현지 주민들에게는 아직도 위험한 상황”이라고 말합니다.

The African Union plans to increase the number of peacekeepers in the western Darfur region of Sudan. The
number will rise from about three-thousand three-hundred to more than seven-thousand-seven-hundred.
Kenya, Rwanda, Nigeria, and Senegal will be providing additional troops. The African Union is also asking its fifty-three member countries and others to provide funding and equipment. The U.S. has already contributed morethan ninety-five-million dollars to support the African Union peacekeeping mission in Darfur. The European Union is supporting the African Union mission in Darfur with more than one-hundred-twenty-million dollars in assistance for
planning and logistical support.
Adam Thiam, an African Union spokesman, says the troop increase is needed to help protect the people of Darfur:
"Where the A-U troop is, there is less insecurity. Insecurity is
happening also because many areas are not covered." (END ACT)
Civil war broke out in Darfur in 2003. Complaining of discrimination by Arab Sudanese, African rebels attacked
government facilities. Sudanese Arab Janjaweed militia supported by the Sudanese government responded by
attacking members of Darfur's African Fur, Masalit, and Zaghawa tribes. Thousands of civilians were killed and there
are numerous reports of violence and rape against women. There are now more than one-million displaced persons in
Darfur, with approximately two-hundred-thousand others living as refugees in neighboring Chad.
A peace agreement was signed this year by representatives of the Sudanese government and the rebel Sudan
People's Liberation Movement. The agreement calls for decentralizing power and sharing Sudan's petroleum wealth.
"The number and scale of incidents [in Darfur] has gone down," says State Department spokesman Richard Boucher.
But, he says, "It's still a dangerous situation for the people there."
