British Prime Minister Tony Blair says it is time to reconsider referring Iran to the U.N. Security Council for possible sanctions over its nuclear program. Mr. Blair said today (Wednesday) that Iran's resumption of nuclear fuel research is a cause for "real and serious" alarm.
British, French and German officials plan to meet this week to discuss sanctions. The United States and Russia also expressed disappointment over Iran's decision. The U.S. and its European allies accuse Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons -- a charge Iran denies.
Former Iranian President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani says the threat of sanctions will not make Iran abandon its nuclear program. The International Atomic Energy Agency ( -- the United Nations' nuclear watchdog body -- ) says Iran plans to produce limited amounts of nuclear fuel for research purposes. Iranian officials say they have not yet begun nuclear-fuel production.
